Many people believe that social media is making us less intelligent. But a new scientific hypothesis suggests something different: it may be changing the way the brain decides whether or not mental effort is worthwhile. Instead of directly harming intelligence, these platforms may be training our brains to prefer quick rewards over activities that require concentration and patience.
For years, researchers have tried to answer a question that worries parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals: is the constant use of social media harming our brains?
Most research has sought to discover whether these platforms diminish memory, attention, or reasoning ability. However, a new article proposes a completely different way of looking at this issue. Instead of asking whether social media makes people less intelligent, scientists suggest that perhaps it is changing something even more fundamental: the way our brains decide when it is worthwhile to expend mental energy to perform a task.
To understand this idea, it is important to know that thinking also requires effort. Just as our muscles tire after intense physical exercise, the brain also needs to expend energy to solve problems, learn new content, or maintain concentration for several hours.
Even before we begin any activity, our brain makes a kind of automatic calculation between the effort required and the expected reward. If we believe that the benefit outweighs the work, we tend to persist. Otherwise, we feel like giving up or looking for something easier and more enjoyable.
This process happens all the time, even without us realizing it, and involves several brain regions related to motivation, planning, and the reward system.

The authors did not conduct a traditional experiment with volunteers. Instead, they gathered findings from different areas of science, including neuroscience, psychology, behavioral economics, and studies on digital behavior, to build a new hypothesis capable of explaining the effects of digital technologies on the mind.
They analyzed previous research that investigated how people distribute their effort throughout the day, how the brain learns through rewards, and how apps and social networks are designed to hold our attention for as long as possible. From this information, they developed a theoretical model that could guide future laboratory experiments and studies that follow people for several years.
According to this model, social networks offer exactly the type of reward the brain likes best: quick, frequent, and unpredictable. Each new like, comment, short video, or notification represents a small reward that requires very little effort to obtain.
Gradually, the brain can learn that investing a few seconds scrolling produces a pleasant sensation much more quickly than dedicating an hour to studying a chapter of a book, writing a report, or learning a new skill.
Researchers call this process "recalibration of the value of effort." In other words, the brain wouldn't be losing its ability to think, but rather changing its perception of which activities are truly worth the investment of time and energy.

This hypothesis also helps explain a behavior that many people recognize in their daily lives. It's common to open your cell phone just to check a message and, without realizing it, spend several minutes watching short videos or browsing through different content. In contrast, tasks that require sustained attention, such as reading an article, studying for a test, or solving a complex problem, seem increasingly tiring.
Scientists suggest that this may happen because the brain is constantly exposed to activities that offer high reward with low mental cost. Over time, activities that once seemed interesting may begin to seem excessively laborious, even when we know they are important for our long-term goals.
The authors emphasize that this proposal still needs to be tested by further research. They suggest that future studies use brain imaging scans, psychological assessments, and the monitoring of thousands of people over the years to verify whether the intense use of digital media actually modifies how the brain evaluates mental effort.

If this hypothesis is confirmed, it could completely change how we understand the effects of digital technologies. Instead of stating that social networks "diminish intelligence," it might be more accurate to say that they influence our motivation to invest energy in activities that require concentration, persistence, and deep learning.
This shift in perspective could help develop more effective strategies for balancing technology use without sacrificing the ability to learn, create, and solve complex problems.

Abstract:
The ubiquity of digital media has sparked widespread debate over their potential effects on our cognition, often centred on concerns about declining cognitive capacity. We propose a framework in which digital media use may influence cognition mainly by recalibrating how effort is valued and allocated. Platforms engineered for minimal friction and immediate reward can reinforce habit loops that bias cost–benefit computations, making low-effort digital activities feel more valuable than cognitively demanding tasks such as focused work. Over time, this recalibration of effort valuation may shift effort allocation tendencies towards exploration rather than the sustained exploitation required for mastery and durable knowledge acquisition. We outline an interdisciplinary research agenda that integrates experimental, neurobiological and longitudinal approaches to empirically test this effort recalibration framework and shift the focus from whether digital media harm cognition to whether and how they reshape our willingness to invest effort in everyday life.
