The Age At Which a Child Experiences Abuse Can Change The Brain in Different Ways

The brain doesn't react the same way to trauma at all stages of life. A new study reveals that the age at which a child suffers abuse can leave completely different marks on the adult brain, helping to explain why some people develop anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress decades later. The discovery could transform how these patients are treated in the future.


The first years of life are fundamental to brain development. It is during childhood and adolescence that we learn to interpret emotions, build relationships, cope with fear, and develop strategies to face difficult situations. When a child suffers physical, emotional, or sexual abuse during this period, the consequences can last for decades.


However, an important question remained unanswered: does the brain react the same way when abuse occurs in early childhood and when it occurs during adolescence? A new study shows that it does not. The age at which the trauma occurs seems to determine which brain circuits will be most profoundly affected in adulthood.


To investigate this question, researchers gathered 635 adults with different profiles. Among them were healthy individuals and those diagnosed with depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Some participants had suffered abuse before the age of 13, others between the ages of 13 and 18, while a third group had never experienced such abuse.


By comparing these different groups, the scientists were able to assess how the timing of the trauma influenced brain function many years later.



The study used a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), an examination that allows researchers to observe which brain regions are most active during specific tasks. While inside the machine, participants viewed photographs of human faces expressing different emotions, such as fear, sadness, anger, disgust, happiness, and neutral expressions.


At times, these images were shown briefly, without the person being fully aware of having seen them, allowing for the evaluation of unconscious emotional processing. At other times, the faces remained visible for longer, allowing participants to consciously recognize each facial expression.


In this way, the researchers were able to compare two different brain systems: the one that reacts automatically to threats and the one that consciously analyzes emotions.



The results revealed striking differences. People who suffered abuse before the age of 13 showed greater hippocampal activity when unconsciously processing negative emotions. The hippocampus is a region essential for forming memories and relating past experiences to present situations.


This increased activity suggests that the brains of these individuals may remain more sensitive to negative emotional cues, even when they are not consciously aware of these stimuli. It's as if very early traumatic experiences leave the brain permanently prepared to identify potential threats in the environment.


Meanwhile, participants who suffered abuse during adolescence showed a completely different pattern. In them, the main alteration occurred in the amygdala, a brain structure responsible for detecting danger and triggering fear, anxiety, and vigilance responses.



Unlike the group that suffered abuse earlier, the amygdala of these individuals showed greater activation when they consciously observed emotional expressions, regardless of whether they were negative or positive. This indicates that traumatic experiences during adolescence can make the brain more reactive to emotions in general, increasing the intensity with which social situations are interpreted.


These differences make sense when we observe how the brain matures throughout life. During early childhood, many areas responsible for emotional control and language are still developing. At this stage, traumatic experiences can be registered mainly in automatic circuits linked to emotions and memories, even before the child can understand or put into words what happened.


During adolescence, regions responsible for reasoning, social interpretation, and emotional regulation are undergoing intense reorganization. Thus, trauma at this stage tends to affect different brain systems than those involved when abuse occurs in the first years of life.



Researchers highlight that these results help explain why two people who suffered abuse can develop quite different emotional difficulties in adulthood. The study also reinforces that there is no "safe age"; any form of abuse can produce significant consequences. What changes is how the brain adapts to these experiences.


Understanding these differences may allow, in the future, the development of more personalized treatments for trauma victims, taking into account not only the type of abuse suffered, but also the stage of life in which it occurred. This represents an important step in understanding how early experiences shape the human brain and why some people remain vulnerable to emotional disorders many years after the end of the violence.

Abstract: 


Abuse experienced during childhood and adolescence significantly influences brain development and increases the risk of psychiatric disorders later in life. However, its long-term impact on emotion processing across psychiatric conditions remains underexplored. In this functional MRI study, we examined a sample of 635 individuals with and without childhood abuse, including people with depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and healthy controls, to investigate differences in brain activation during conscious and non-conscious emotional face processing. Brain activation across regions involved in emotional regulation was compared in response to negative (anger, fear, disgust, sadness), happy and neutral facial expressions. Individuals exposed to abuse before age 13 showed heightened hippocampal activation during non-conscious negative emotion processing compared to non-abused individuals, an effect absent in those exposed to abuse between ages 13 and 18. Additionally, amygdala activation during conscious emotion processing was elevated across all emotions in individuals who experienced adolescent abuse (13–18 years), compared to both abuse-free individuals and those exposed to early childhood abuse. This transdiagnostic approach highlights distinct vulnerability windows in brain development, with differential effects on emotion processing depending on the timing of abuse. Our study provides novel insights into how early life adversities shapes emotional processing, advancing our understanding of its transdiagnostic impact on brain function.
